Floating Coordinates: Self in Transit, 2025

Group Exhibition | Curated by Hongjin Zhou

Featuring works by Claudia Shi, Loane Tran Colatruglio, Rainy Yuchen Wei, and Tori Liu

Floating Coordinates: Self in Transit brings together four artists whose practices explore displacement, cultural memory, and the evolving nature of identity. Through painting, photography, and video, the exhibition considers how experiences of migration and encounters with different cultures reshape one's understanding of belonging.

Rainy Yuchen Wei presented three oil paintings that explore these ideas through material accumulation, abstraction, and the physical act of painting. Built through successive layers of color, gestural marks, and textured surfaces, the works evoke organic forms that emerge, overlap, and dissolve into one another. Their shifting compositions suggest landscapes and structures that remain in motion, resisting a singular or fixed interpretation.

Drawing from her experiences of living across China, Canada, and the United States, Wei approaches painting as a process of continual negotiation between memory and the present. Earlier gestures remain partially visible beneath new layers, reflecting how personal histories persist even as they are transformed by changing environments. Within the context of Floating Coordinates, these paintings consider identity not as a stable destination, but as something continuously formed through movement, memory, and the accumulation of lived experience.
