Artist Book Introduction

Balloon Pages is a book that transforms into a sculptural hot-air balloon. I began by drawing the outline of a balloon in Adobe Illustrator, then used clipping masks to embed photographs and video stills from my hot-air balloon flight in Mexico into the balloon’s form. Each page was printed on heavy cardstock and assembled so that, when folded together, the book rises into a three-dimensional balloon.

The first and last pages are reinforced with binding board and book cloth, beneath which I embedded small magnets. These hidden elements allow the covers to meet and lock, completing the circular shape of the balloon. On the back, a quiet instruction reads: “Let the magnets on covers meet, stand me up.”

This work turns memory into an object of air and weight, intimacy and play. The pages are fragments of the journey, but when the book stands upright, they unite as a single body of flight—an invitation to both read and hold the experience of rising.
